Avril Keys, a 40-something busy mum of three as she describes herself, is the Belfast-based successful blogger behind A Life to Style, who has been involved in this increasingly competitive world for seven years now. She enjoys fashion, food and fitness and she uses her blog as a diary for style addressed to ordinary women like herself.

What inspired you to start your blog, Avril?

I was on maternity leave from my job in financial services and I realised that I really had no casual clothing to speak of - my wardrobe was full of suits! So I started reading some blogs to get ideas of what I should be wearing and found myself getting lots of ideas but having to source them on the high street. Most blogs back then were written by fashion stylists and magazine editors and the prices were completely out of my budget. Then I started to think that there was a gap in the market for an affordable style blog, one that other women at home with kids could relate to. And the rest, as they say, is history! 6 years on, I’m still blogging away and loving it!

How would you describe your personal style and is there a person who is a fashion inspiration to you?

Casual with structure. I will always have a closer fitted top or bottom, but never both at the same time. My biggest thing is building in a few on-trend pieces each season, adapting in a 40+ appropriate way. So it’s dressing in a youthful way, without looking too mutton! My fashion inspirations are always other bloggers around my age because they are relatable and help me achieve that mix of high fashion with practical daily mum-wear. My favourites are Michelle from My Fashionable 40’s and Fran from The Fashion Lift.

List your 5 must-haves for the summer.

These last summers, it’s been the season of the dress so number 1 and 2 would be midi and maxi dresses respectively. Button down the front ones especially so you can wear them kimono style over jeans too. Number 3 would be a great fitting dark denim jacket because it works over the dresses to stop them looking too OTT. Number 4 is a summer cross body bag; 2017 was all about the basket bag and they have been huge again this last summer. And number 5? Well the espadrille completely ruled this summer too as they’re the perfect way to dress up casual style without looking overdressed.

Heels or flats?

I’m a huge fan of wedges because they give you the height without the formality of a heel. So I’m somewhere in the middle loving my mid-wedge height.

What are some of your current fashion obsessions?

Bags, shoes and coats have been the constant for me over the years. My mum is to blame apparently! I have way too many of all three items and could happily keep buying and buying! I am a sucker for a gorgeous ankle boot and a killer cross body bag.

You would never leave home without….

My phone - aren’t we all the same?! I am constantly scouring for things to share on the blog and always looking for a great photo op if I’m wearing an outfit worth sharing.

Where would you like to be in blogging five years from now?

I’m not sure if I still will be blogging in the purest sense. Instagram and the desire to look rather than read will mean that there will be fewer blogs by then. So many people have moved off the website format and now use social media exclusively. For me, my readership is still looking for a website presence and I have many readers who don’t use any social media channels but I think by 2022, the demand for an actual blog will have diminished. It’s a shame but equally, there’s lots of work involved in putting up a blog post and 99% of content is unpaid so it just won’t be commercially viable for us all to keep writing.

The biggest tip you have for anyone wanting to start a fashion blog would be… ?

Honestly….I’d say stick to social media. The discipline of posting daily, sourcing new content and taking great photos is still ever present on social media so it’s a great starting point. If you find you thrive on this discipline and really want to write more words, then after 6 months, start writing on your website. There’s lots of time and energy required to set up a blog and many people find they run out of steam after 3 months so don’t waste hours until you know you’re going to keep it up.

¿Qué te inspiró para empezar a escribir tu blog, Avril?

Estaba de baja por maternidad (trabajo en finanzas) y me di cuenta de que no tenía ningún atuendo que fuera casual porque ¡mi armario estaba lleno de trajes! Así que empecé a leer algunos blogs para coger ideas de lo que debería ponerme y me encontré con un montón de ideas pero que luego era difícil encontrar en la moda de a pie de calle. En aquella época la mayoría de los blogs estaban escritos por estilistas de moda y editores de revistas y los precios eran desorbitados, mucho más allá de mi presupuesto. Así que me di cuenta de que había un hueco en el mercado que debía ser rellenado, con un blog de estilo al alcance de todos, uno con el que todas las mujeres, incluso las que están en casa cuidando de sus niños como estaba yo, también se pudieran identificar. Y el resto, como dicen, ¡es historia! Ya llevo 7 años con el blog y ¡me sigue encantando cada día!

¿Cómo describirías tu estilo personal? ¿Hay alguien que sea tu inspiración en cuestión de moda?

Casual con estructura y sentido. Siempre opto por una parte de arriba o de abajo ajustada pero nunca ambos al mismo tiempo. Mi meta más grande es trabajar con una selección de prendas de moda cada temporada pero adaptadas de forma adecuada a mujeres de 40 o más. Es decir, vestir de forma juvenil pero sin parecer una adolescente.

Mi inspiración en cuestión de moda son siempre otras blogueras de mi edad, porque me identifico con ellas y me ayudan a poder conseguir esa mezcla de alta costura con un estilo más de todos los días. Mis favoritas son Michelle de My Fashionable 40’s y Fran de The Fashion Lift.

Tus 5 imprescindible para el verano.

Estos veranos pasados han sido las temporadas reinas del vestido así que los números 1 y 2 serían vestidos midi y maxi respectivamente. Especialmente, con botones en la parte delantera que también puedes llevar a modo quimono por encima de tus pantalones vaqueros. El número 3 sería una estupenda chaqueta vaquera oscura y ajustada,ya que es perfecta para darle un toque más casual a los vestidos y no parecer demasiado arreglada. El número 4 un bolso de bandolera; 2017 fue el año del bolso tipo cesta de mimbre o rafia y han seguido pegando fuerte este último verano. ¿Y el número 5? Bueno, las alpargatas han sido las reinas del verano durante ya un par de temporadas porque son perfectas para ir arreglada de forma casual pero sin pasarse.

¿Tacones o zapatos planos?

Soy una fan incondicional de las cuñas porque te ofrecen la altura necesaria sin la formalidad del tacón. Así que estoy ahí en un punto intermedio con mi amor a las cuñas de media altura.’

Tus obsesiones de moda actualmente son...

Bolsos, zapatos y abrigos han sido mi obsesión desde hace ya años. ¡Mi madre tiene la culpa parece ser! Tengo demasiados de los tres tipos pero soy feliz comprando y comprando más. Me muero además por un bonito botín y un buen bolso de bandolera.

Nunca saldrías de casa sin ...

Mi teléfono. ¿No le pasa a todo el mundo? Estoy todo el rato buscando cosas para compartir en mi blog y siempre también buscando la oportunidad para sacar una buena foto si llevo un modelo que crea conveniente compartir.

¿Dónde te gustaría estar en el mundo del blog de aquí a cinco años?

No estoy segura si continuaré con el blog en su pura esencia. Creo que Instagram y ese deseo por no leer y solo mirar hará que haya menos blogs de aquí a allá. Hay mucha gente que ya ha dejado el formato web y ahora utiliza exclusivamente las redes sociales. En mi caso, mis lectores todavía están interesados en el formato de página web y tengo además muchos lectores que no usan ninguna red social, pero sospecho que para 2022 la demanda de los blogs habrá disminuido. Es una pena pero, de cualquier forma, lleva mucho trabajo el mantener activo un blog y el 99% del contenido no está retribuido, así que no será comercialmente rentable seguir escribiendo en ellos.

¿Cuál sería tu mayor consejo para alguien que quiera empezar un blog?

Sinceramente... me ceñiría a las redes sociales. La filosofía de hacer una entrada a diario, crear nuevo contenido y sacar buenas fotografías está aún presente en las redes sociales así que es un gran punto de partida. Si después de seis meses la persona se siente atraída por escribir más, entonces que empiece a construir su blog en una página web. Se necesita mucho tiempo y energía para esta tarea y mucha gente pierde fuelle pasados tres meses, así que no merece la pena invertir más tiempo si no se sabe con seguridad si se va a continuar.
